“Adding Human Relationships to Solo Work at Home Businesses”

Owning your own work at home business can be a very lonely affair, although I do admit I don’t mind it.  I am sure because I spend the most of my time at home with my 3 dogs and 2 cats but then again I am talking about Human relationships here. You could spend all day by yourself, in your bedroom or office. Unlike a normal office, you get little to no social interaction.

Working alone like this can be quite unhealthy for many reasons. It can cause depression, it can cause loneliness and it can decrease motivation. Furthermore, you won't have people to bounce ideas off of, to collaborate with or to hold you accountable.

Adding human interaction back into the mix is a fantastic way to add more support to your life and your business. You'll be happier, work better and likely be more successful.

Go to Conferences:  Conferences allow you to meet other people in your industry. It allows you to meet "gurus," vendors, advertisers and all kinds of other valuable contacts. You'll often end up staying in touch with a lot of the people you meet at conferences.

Local Meet-ups:  There are many local meet-ups you can attend. These might include entrepreneur meet-ups, internet marketing meet-ups, tech meet-ups, blogger meet-ups or meet-ups in your specific niche or industry. Start by looking on Meetup.com and Craigslist.com, then network your way into other events.

In-person events are a fantastic way of meeting like-minded people in the same geographical area. You can then co-work with the people you meet or brainstorm ideas later on.

Form a Mastermind Group:  A mastermind group is a group of people who get together in person on a regular basis to share ideas and help one another succeed. In a typical workplace, co-workers regularly bounce ideas off one another. For the home business owner, the mastermind group is the place to do this.

Most mastermind groups are small and need to be formed by the members themselves. Attend local events, go to conferences and look for people who're at a similar level to where you're at. Then bring up the topic of forming a mastermind group together. Make sure everyone is clear about what they want to get from the group.

These are some of the ways you can add more human interaction to your home-based business. Flying solo all the time not only isn't effective, but is quite unhealthy. Invest the time to build some relationships in your area. It really makes a difference.

“How To Find Your Place In An Entrepreneur World”

I have been an entrepreneur most of my life.  Deciding to become an entrepreneur is just the beginning. You know you want to own your own business and control your fate, but you’re not yet sure exactly what it is that you should do. Thankfully, by answering the following questions you can narrow down your choices and finally find your place in an entrepreneur world.

What are your interests? While you don’t need to be an expert in the business you choose to start, it will help you get ahead of the game if you have some interest in it already. If you have a passion for it, it makes it that much easier. What’s more, if you are actually an audience member for your business idea, then that’s even better because you will already have a lot of the information you need to get started.

How much starting capital do you have?  Don’t panic if you have nothing to get started, but it’s good to be accurate and know what you have. Figure out if there are things you can sell quickly to gather some money to get started. If you have a number in mind then you’ll know which business ideas are out of bounds and which ones you can truly make happen. This is not the time for pie-in-the-sky thinking; this is a time to be realistic.

What skills do you have?  Even if you’re not sure yet what you want to do, identify your skills. Do you enjoy people? If so, what kind of people do you like the most and who would you like working with the most? Often starting with your target audience is the best way to choose a business. If you can narrow down your skill level and the type of people you want to work with, you can get far in choosing a business to start.

What skills can you buy?  When you start a business it’s important to realize that you cannot (and should not) do everything. If your budget is super tight you might have to start with what you know instead of what you can buy. However, knowing what you can buy will help you imagine the future as your business grows.

What skills should you learn?  If you’ve realized you have holes in your skill level, are they skills you can learn? If something has come to mind that needs licensure, can you get it? How long will it take? What will it cost? How will you get to the class; are they online or offline?

What resources do you have?  Some of the resources you already have might be a computer, internet access, and even your skills and people that you know. Make a list of any resource, be it a person, place or thing that can help you reach your business ownership goals.

What resources do you need?  As you listed resources you have, you likely came up with some resources you do not have but need. Don’t panic; just make the list and think about listing them in order of "must have" to just "want to have."

What type of personality do you have?  Are you a loner? Do you enjoy spending long hours in front of your computer or would you like to do something that is more active? Do you like being with a certain type of person? Are you a morning person or a night person? When you identify how you work best and whom you work best with, it will help narrow down your choices.

What is your risk toleration level?  Everyone has a certain level of risk aversion. One way to look at it is to ask: how much can you stand to lose without destroying your marriage, losing your home, or giving up time with your children? If you have a low tolerance for risk, you may not want to become a day trader.

How much time do you have to devote?  If you currently have a job that you have to go to, and want to start a business part time, it’s important to still identify how much time you can realistically devote to getting a business off the ground right now. Even if it’s just two hours a night after dinner, there is something you can do to start a business. But, the amount of time, along with the other information you’ve gathered will help narrow down your choices.

Answering these questions can help you determine the area you should enter into as an entrepreneur. Giving the next steps after your self-evaluation a lot of thought and consideration as you craft a plan of action will ensure your success today and in the future.

“Money Doesn’t Equal Success”

2/23/2015

Written by Doreen Dilger, The Home Based Business Coach

Someone once said that, “While money doesn’t buy happiness, it sure does make me giggle a lot.” Obviously, this was said by someone who not only was given money, but also had time to spend it. Because, the truth is, money alone doesn’t create joy; being able to have time to spend it and do things with those you love is what happiness and success truly is. When people want to become entrepreneurs they don’t actually think about the work; they think about the flexibility and freedom.

What Is Success?  This boils down to what success really is. Success is freedom. Success means that you can take the day off to spend with your kids on a field trip. Success means that if you want to enjoy a leisurely breakfast with your spouse on Sunday morning, you can.  Success means that if you want to take that trip to Nepal, you can. Yes, money does help you afford those things, but money is only the means by which you can purchase them and anyone can make money. But, not everyone who has money also has the time to actually enjoy it. Time is finite; money is not.

The Value of Time:  Timothy Ferriss, in his book, The 4-Hour Work Week says, “To enjoy life, you don’t need fancy nonsense, but you do need to control your time and realize that most things just aren’t as serious as you make them out to be.”

That’s why prioritizing the things you do things based on money will often backfire. Instead, base everything you do on what kind of time it will cost you. What will it take you away from that you really would rather be doing? Some things, of course, have to be done that we don’t want to do. However, most of those things can be outsourced and worked around the most important things on your to-do list. Most things can simply wait.

People who are truly successful in life realize the truth of the limits of time and they do everything they can to make the most of the time they have. That’s why some of the most successful people you know are so productive. Successful people often live by their calendars and schedules. That might seem unromantic but the truth is, scheduling in work and fun will make your life better by leaps and bounds.

In fact, get out your calendar right now and first schedule in all the things you want to do with your family and for yourself that are not related to work. Once you’ve done that, you can fit in work around those things. That’s the entire point of becoming an entrepreneur - to have freedom, but it’s important that you remember what constitutes freedom. Not money, but time. How much is your time worth?

“Marketing Your Business on a Shoestring Budget?”

If you’re just starting out, or you are finding that you’re short on funds, or even if you’re like me and like to watch the money you spend, you may need to find ways to market your business on a shoestring budget.  Just because it’s inexpensive doesn’t mean it’s not effective, though. In fact, some of the most effective forms of marketing are the least expensive.

Use the Good Old Business Card:  You can get inexpensive business cards online from websites like Vistaprint.com or make them on your own printer with your computer. I generally print from Vistaprint because I change-up my messages all the time.  Do not use the free versions of business cards, but if you find a coupon or get a discount code you can get cards inexpensively. Now, use them.

When you go to any event, be sure to leave your business card. When you have any reason to hand out your phone number to anyone, for any reason, even if it’s not totally related to business, give them your business card. You never know when someone will need the services you offer, or when your friends and family will meet up with someone who needs your services. Hand your cards out freely.

Build a Website with a Blog:  It’s very important to watch your budget, using self-hosted websites with a blog that looks professional really easy. I get my domains names from godaddy.com and I use weebly.com for my websites.  Simple, easy and very affordable!

Use Social Media to Promote Everything:  Set up branded social media accounts for your business. But, you don’t have to be on all social media networks. Instead use the knowledge that you have about your audience to choose which social media networks that you should be present on. Make good profiles that represent your brand in a cohesive way.

When you write a blog post, send it to social media. When you take a picture of something, or have a question about something you’re creating, mention it on social media. Use social media to engage your audience in creative ways. You can use social media to get email list signups, promote events, and more – all free.

Find a Joint Venture Partner for a Project:  A JV partnership is not a real business partnership. It’s a joining of forces or collaboration between complementary business owners who share an audience but are not in direct competition. Finding a project to work on like this can essentially help you both double your audience.

Make the JV partnership a time-limited project that has a definite beginning and ending to start. Determine all the rules and how money will be handled up front and put it all in a contract. Define each aspect of the work that each of you will be responsible for completing. Be clear and stick to the plan and you’ll both come out successful.

Write a Book:  If you’re an expert on anything, you can write a book about the topic. You can publish it easily on Kindle, or promote it as a PDF document right from your website. You can sell it, or give it away for free. It’s up to you. But, a book can push you forward in the eyes of your audience as a true expert and become a calling card.

Get on the Speaking Circuit:  Using your book as a foundation, put the word out that you’re ready to give talks locally and for the cost of a ticket, room and board, go to other speaking events. Sometimes, you can even get paid for speaking once you’re established and in demand. So, not only can speaking become a good marketing opportunity, but it can also become a new revenue stream.

Create Buzz:  When you really have no money, a great way to get the word out is to create a lot of buzz. You can do this in a number of ways. Create a viral video, write a controversial blog post, or have a contest with videos that get voted on by the video creator's friends, family and audience. It’s a great way to get people talking and to get free advertising. Offer a relevant and amazing prize package and it’ll also create buzz.

Build Relationships through Networking:  Choose networking events wisely. You want to network with people who can become clients, or who can send you clients. Since your budget is limited, try to find online or local networking events that you can attend. There are many mastermind groups online that have a fee for joining, but are awesome ways to find clients once you spend the time building relationships and developing trust.

Incentivize Referrals:  A really great way to increase your customer base is to convince your customers to refer you to others. Most of the time satisfied customers will tell others about you, but in some cases they may not because they want to keep you to themselves. This is especially true with service-based businesses. So, a great way to overcome this issue is to give your customers a reason to tell others about you such as a discount coupon, or additional freebies for each paying customer they send your way.

If you sell products, consider starting an affiliate program as a way to get more people to tell others about your products and make more sales without it costing you anything more than a percentage of sales.

Using these marketing ideas when you have little to no money will take mostly time, especially if you need to learn how to use the technology. However, putting to work even a couple of these ideas will push your business forward.

“Tips for Sharing Your Unique Voice and Vision with the World?”

2/17/2015

Written by Doreen Dilger, The Home Based Business Coach

As a home based business, I know how important it is to have a unique voice but the key is how to express that to the world.  Your blog, website, email newsletter, social media posts and other means with which to communicate with the world is how you’ll share your unique voice, vision and perspective. These things that are unique to you, are what will make your blog stand out from the competition in a way that resonates with your audience.

* Blog Regularly – The first thing you need to know about getting your vision and voice out into the world is that you need to do it regularly. Blog regularly, update social media regularly, appear as a guest regularly and take every opportunity to be yourself representing your brand regularly.

* Mix Up the Formats – A blog doesn’t have to be text based. It can be in the form of infographics, memes, podcasts, videos and more. Use every content format that you can as long as it fits within your brand and the image you want to portray. Repurpose content into new forms to get the word out to more people.

* Create a Plan of Action – The content that you create should have a purpose. The best way to ensure that the purpose matches your goals is to develop a content plan that you will use across all channels and that encompasses all promotions planned and events scheduled. Additionally, your plan can include current events and updated news if you’re ready.

* Understand Your Niche - You can never study your niche enough. Devote some of your time each week to understanding your niche, backwards and forwards. Study the history of your industry as well as what is happening today and what might happen in the future. Keeping your ear to the ground will make you a go-to expert in your niche and keep your blog current.

* Know Your Audience – While you do want to add your own vision and voice, it’s also important to understand how far you can go without upsetting your core audience. For example, if you start a blog for people who choose to be childless and then change your mind, that’s okay, but realize that you’re going to change your audience entirely as well as the focus of your blog.

* Don’t Be Afraid to Be You – One of the most wonderful aspects of being online is the ability to be free to be yourself. You will find support and belonging for any lifestyle. You’ll also find detractors. But, to be truly authentic you cannot worry too much about your detractors. Put your audience and your true self first and foremost.

* Be Consistent across All Channels – Whether it’s your blog or a social media channel, it’s important that you keep the same flavor, voice, and vision apparent in each space. This will make you appear more trustworthy and help your audience get to know you even better.

* Engage Authentically With Your Audience – Outside of blog posts, social media posts and other forms of content that you put out into the world, there are discussions and commenting in which to engage. Be yourself when you engage with your audience, too. They want to know what you really think and this is a great way to do so.

Each blog post or other content that you send out into the world are important all on their own. The content spreads your message, establishes you as an expert, and drives traffic through keywords and more. Each deserves the attention called for to bring your unique voice and vision to them.

Even if you hire someone to write for you as a ghostwriter, it’s important that you edit the content to bring more of yourself to the blog. Whether it’s a sign-off phrase you want to use, or a special way with words that impact the readers doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re consistently yourself no matter where the content appears.

“Self-Sabotage: How To Recognize and Overcome It”

Written by Doreen Dilger, The Home Based Business Coach

As a home based business coach, I often recognize self-sabotage within my clients.  If you’re not having the type of success that you want, it is possible that you’re experiencing some self-sabotaging behaviors. And, if you are engaging in these types of behaviors then it’s important to identify what you’re doing and turn it around.

* Playing the Waiting Game – If you ever hear yourself say, “I’ll be do that when xyz” then stop it right now. You may have always done this and not realized it. “When I lose weight I’ll go hiking.” “When I finish this client’s work I’ll write the great American novel.” “When I do x then I’ll do y.” It all makes sense but it’s a waiting game that will never end. If you don’t take action now, nothing will happen.

* You Hang Around the Wrong People – Yes, even as an adult you can choose the wrong friends. If you often find yourself at odds with your friends’ values and goals in life, or find yourself apologizing for other people’s behavior, you’re just making excuses to avoid an uncomfortable conclusion. You’ve outgrown your friends.

* Saying: “I’ll never ….” – Fill in the blank about what you’re never say, do or feel. They say you should, “never say never”, and nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is, if you don’t believe you’ll become successful at your business, or lose that extra weight, you likely won’t. You have to envision the success you want to achieve to make it happen. If all you see is negative, that’s all you’ll get.

* I Don’t Want to Do “It” Alone – The fact is we are all ultimately alone. If you wait around for everyone to be on the same page as you, you may miss out on a great new adventure. Whether it’s starting a business, seeing a movie, or trying a new restaurant, you can do it yourself without anyone else doing it with you.

* Thinking You’re Not “Smart” As…. – The truth is, someone is always going to be smarter, prettier, or something more than you. By saying that you’re not something, you will have a hard time breaking out of the box you’ve put yourself in. Forget about who you think you are, and do what it is that you want to do. No need to be perfect.

* You Hide Your Feelings – When someone asks you a question about your feelings, you simply say “I’m fine” and leave it at that - even when you are not fine. Did you know that you can get stuck in a certain mindset if you avoid it and don’t talk about it? That’s true whether it’s about work or something personal. You have to name it to change it.

* My Client Needs Me – The fact is, everyone is replaceable. If you find that you’re working with someone just because you think they need you, even when the relationship is not working for you, you’re really wasting your time. A client who is not compatible with you will drop you the moment they find someone they’re compatible with. Don’t do anyone any favors unless you really just want to.

* You Lack a Support System – Support can come in a variety of forms, from human support to electronic support. If you set up a good system to help you stick to your schedule (whether it’s for work or fun) and get help when you need it, you will be a lot more successful than if you don’t do that.

Finally, being self-aware enough to notice self-sabotaging behavior will go far in helping you curb it. Give some thought to how you’re running your life so that you can kick self-sabotaging behavior to the curb.

“How To Earn The Attention Of Your Audience?”

2/11/2015

Written by Doreen Dilger, The Home Based Business Coach

Earning the attention of your audience is an ongoing process - one that transcends location. You'll need to earn attention online, offline, and in between to make the most impact. You can earn attention from the type of content that you share on every channel. The content should be consistent, relevant and truly represent you and your business.

Build Consistency across All Channels:  Whether it's an author's profile, a social media profile or your guest blogger bio, it's imperative that how you represent yourself is consistent across all different mediums. You don't want to confuse anyone as to who you are, what you do, and what you stand for.

In addition, consistency can relate to the frequency by which you distribute content for your audience. It needs to be ongoing and regular in order to be effective. Studies show that blogging at least 20 times per month leads to at least 55 percent more traffic.

Create Relevant Content with Your Audience in Mind:  If the content you're sharing across all channels is not relevant to your audience, you're wasting your time. Sure, it's fun to share a funny cat picture sometimes, but if you cannot relate it to your business, best leave that for your personal accounts and not your business accounts.

Those who trusted you enough to connect with you are expecting a certain amount of professionalism and for you to stick to the subject matter at hand. This is especially true on social media where your audience will not hesitate to tell you when you're way off the mark.

Develop a Story That Is a True Representation of Your Business:  Don't pass around a fake story. The internet is full of real people, with real stories, so there's no point in making one up that is not true. Your story is important - no need to embellish it. Plus, if people found out you lied or embellished you will have a real hard time (if it's even possible at all) reconnecting with people and earning their attention again. You really only get one chance. Just be the best you, and tell the best real story of you and your business that you have.

Finally, be willing to take a little risk occasionally. While consistency is needed in your message, how you deliver the message can take many different forms. You don't have to settle for being boring or even become "expected" - instead you can combine consistency with taking a risk now and then with a controversial headline, or by jumping out of your comfort zone to host a live event, for example.

“Attracting New Clients Through Community Involvement?”

2/9/2015

Written by Doreen Dilger, The Home Based Business Coach

There are several ways in which you can attract new clients to your home-based business, but one of the most effective is via community involvement. Don't get worried. Community involvement can happen both on and offline. You can do both for best impact, but if there is a reason you can only participate online that is fine too.

There are two types of communities you can get involved in. You can involve yourself in a community of your peers, or a community of your audience.

Peer Groups: In terms of peer groups, there are peers with whom you are in direct competition and those who offer complementary services to yours. Both can help you get clients but the complementary group will be more beneficial to you because they are not direct competition. Consider that when you get involved in any particular group.

Business focused groups, mastermind groups, industry focused groups and so forth all exist to help you educate yourself further and provide connections. You can get clients through word of mouth when a peer group member feels you would be right for a position because they have come to know you. Peer groups also offer opportunities for joint venture (JV) partnerships which can widen and expand your audience.

Niche Groups:  Audience or niche groups are the best place for you to spend your time because you can find groups full of your ideal clients. You can locate these groups by looking at local meet-ups in the area, searching for groups on LinkedIn.com, and searching for and joining message boards devoted to a particular niche.

The key making niche groups work is to join the group, freely answer questions for them and let them come to see you as part of the group. Let your signature line speak for itself, and do not try to sell your services at all. They will come to you when they see that you offer what they want via your normal sharing mechanisms.

Understand the Pros and Cons

Be a free and open source of information regarding your niche. This is how people will get to know you and trust you and start seeing you as someone to refer to others or hire. There can be problems with choosing to spend more time in communities of your peers than in communities consisting of your niche audience. Doing so can result in a problem finding your ideal clients and being stuck in a bubble of competitors.

You want to focus on spending more time in communities that are made up of your ideal audience than with your peers but you want to also participate in peer communities so that you can become known as a community expert.

Finally, when you join either type of group you want to realize that when you first join, you are the new person and you are unknown. No one is going to trust you immediately - whether they are meeting you in person or online. Take the time to get to know others before offering your services in any manner, and get to know the culture of the group. Let your business card or your signature line do the selling for you. Make participation your goal and more clients will be the result.

“7 Tips To Blogging Effectively?”

2/6/2015

Written by Doreen Dilger, The Home Based Business Coach

You know you're supposed to blog to help bring traffic to your website. However, it's important to have a plan about what you're going to blog about, what format everything will be in, and to understand what your goals are. Without knowing the point of your blogging you won't be successful.

1. Your Blog Should Be on Your Website

Don't create a blog separate from your website. Your blog should be on the website you're trying to promote. You want to bring traffic to your most important asset, so most of the content that you create should be right on your own website. That includes blog posts, articles, videos, graphics, and more.

2. Insert Relevant Graphics and Images

To make your blog posts more interesting it's important to insert relevant graphics and images into your blog posts. You want to make use of white space and graphics to make your content more interesting and readable to your audience. Images can help people understand text better by giving them a visual representation of your message.

3. Mix Up Types of Content with Images, Podcasts, Video, and Text

Your blog doesn't have to be all text. In fact, it shouldn't be all text. It's best to mix up the forms of content. Try using infographics, podcasts, video and text for your blog posts. This will give your audience an interesting variety of content to read and view that will keep them coming back. Plus, not everyone likes the same type of content, so repurposing content into different forms is also helpful.

4. Understand Who Your Audience Is

If you don't know who your audience is, it will be difficult to create content that is useful for them. You need to do research about your audience so that you can create audience personas. By being able to create an actual persona that you will create content for, you'll be able to create more interesting content that truly works to attract your target audience. In addition, you'll be able to create products and/or services that they need more easily because you understand them.

5. Create Relevant Content on a Regular Basis

Studies show that creating at least 20 blog posts a month will bring in 97 percent more inbound links than if you don't blog. In fact, according to blog experts, 92 percent of companies that blog more than once a day get more customers from their blogs. As you can see, you need a lot of relevant content to be successful. But, it's easy to produce content when you see the results.

6. Understand What the Point of the Content Is

Each blog post that you create needs a reason for being. Don't just create content willy-nilly with no idea why. You may be promoting your products or services, or educating your audience on a subject important to them, or sharing someone else's work regarding your topic. Whatever the reason is, it's important to understand the point. Do you want more newsletter sign-ups? Do you want to sell something? What is your point?

7. Promote Your Blog Posts with Social Media

Finally, it's important to promote each blog post that you create. Promote it via your own social networks, and ask your followers to do the same. Make it easy for people to share, no matter how they found out about your blog. Put share buttons for a variety of social media networks on your blog. Put share buttons on your email newsletter too. The easier you make it for people to share, the better.

Have a question or comment about this blog?  Please post below.  As a way of thanking my audience for participating I am doing a monthly give-a-way for all those who read my blog posts, sign up for my FREE Report or those who participate in any of my seminars.  One lucky winner will be picked on the last Friday of each month and announced here on my blog.
